It’s that time of year again! The time when students are starting to get antsy and teachers are scrambling to fit in all the standards before the end of the year. We all know that tests can be stressful, both for students and teachers. But there are ways to make reviewing for a big test a little less daunting. Here are four ways to review using task cards for test review that will help your students retain the information and have some fun too.
1. Scavenger Hunt
Hide the task cards around the room and have students work in teams to find them all. As they find each card, they must answer the question on that card correctly before moving on to the next one. Here are some great end-of-year task card choices!
2. Around the Room
Students stand up and walk around the room. Whenever they hear you say “stop,” they must find someone else who is close by and answer the question on their task card. Once both students have answered, they can sit down so you know they are finished. When all students are sitting, it’s time to play again! Have students trade cards with their partners before starting the next round so that they see as many different questions as possible. Here are some great spring task card choices!
3. Scoot
This is a great game for getting students up and moving while still reviewing important information. To play, put a task card at each student’s desk. Give students a certain amount of time to answer the question on their cards. When time is up, they scoot their chair to the desk behind them, grab that student’s card, and answer the question on that one. Students love this because it’s active, and you can easily differentiate by giving different groups different sets of task cards.
4. Write the Room
This is another great activity for getting students up and moving while they review. Put task cards around the room and have students walk around with a clipboard to record their answers. You can also have them work through task cards in Google Classroom or Easel if you want to go paperless.
Another way to make review more fun and engaging for students is to bring in the holiday or season at hand by using some simple decorations and holiday-themed task cards.
