Oh, how I wish I could get back all those hours I spent with my smell markers creating giant math anchor charts on poster paper! Okay…I don’t regret the smell markers, but the time! What I’ve found is that using a printable version that each kid can have for themselves is way more effective. I still display a bigger version on the smart board while I introduce and review topics, but I also give a small version to each student that fits right inside their math notebook.

Yes, it takes a little time, and yes, we end up with paper scraps on the floor, but it’s worth it. They’ve spent enough time on the interactive page to let their brains absorb the new content and process it. There’s something about the cutting, pasting, and coloring that allows the brain to anchor to the new learning in a way that worksheets just can’t.
