If you want to go all out with your pirate theme, there are tons of decorations you can incorporate, but a little ambiance goes a long way when it comes to a pirate theme. It can be as simple as playing the soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean as students work, finding a striped shirt and an old pair of tattered pants to be your costume, and greeting your students with a silly pirate voice. Watching their teacher be silly is the best part for kids!

Math Activities for Talk Like a Pirate Day:

Pirate Multiplication Project:

Most of my Talk Like a Pirate Day math lesson plans revolve around a buried treasure project. This buried treasure multiplication project reviews all the basic multiplication facts while taking kids on an imaginary quest to find a buried treasure.

It includes activities for using math to come up with a pirate name, buying supplies to make ready for the sea, using multiplication word problems to describe their adventures sailing the savage seas, using a treasure map where X marks the spot, and then counting their pirate booty once the treasure is discovered. X Marks the Spot:

For my early finishers, I challenge them to start thinking about coordinate planes by giving them grid paper with an x and y axis and having them create their own treasure a map where X marks the spot for Talk Like a Pirate Day! The intersection of the two lines should be the starting spot and then students can describe how many steps treasure hunters will need to take the right, left, up, or down on the plane to find the treasure at X marks the spot.

This hands-on activity lets students get their toes wet with the concept of coordinate planes, reinforces spatial reasoning, and encourages students to use their imaginations as they chart their course to riches.
